Author Mares to Talk on History of Beer

Bill Mares

GREENSBORO – The Greensboro Free Library will present Burlington author and speaker Bill Mares on Wednesday, August 2, at 5 p.m. Mares came last year to present on the history of beekeeping, and this year he will talk about another of his projects, homebrewing, in a Vermont Humanities Council program, “From Homebrew to the House of Fermontology.” Mares began making his own beer 45 years ago, when home brewing was illegal and there were no microbreweries in America. Today there are over 7,000 such breweries nationwide, and Vermont has the highest percentage of breweries per capita in the country. Mares has written three editions of the book, “Making Beer,” and fathered Vermont’s brewpub-enabling law in the 1980s. In this presentation, he will offer a short history of beer and discuss Vermont’s small but significant contribution to the American beer revolution. Mares has been a reporter-photographer, state legislator and high school teacher. He has authored or coauthored 17 books, most recently the history of beekeeping in Vermont, “The Land of Milk and Honey.” Mare’s talk will be held in the library’s upstairs meeting room, and is free and open to everyone.
