ENOSBURG – The Hazen Union girls’ soccer team had a challenging schedule to start the season last week as they dropped decisions to D3 Enosburg and BFA-Fairfax on the road.
Sophie Burns scored twice and Lexus Conger and Gabby Spaulding tallied a goal apiece as Enosburg pulled away in the second half to down Hazen Union at home last Tuesday, 4-1. Maverick Murphy tied the game at 1-1 one minute into the second half for the Lady Cats, but Enosburg’s experience rose to the top down the stretch. Alleigh Gabaree was strong in net in the opener, making 29 stops in the loss.
“They are a very talented veteran team and we had five players playing in their first varsity game, but there were a lot of positives to take away. We hung tough, playing through injuries and we had some nice stretches of controlling possession with some good passes,” said head coach Harry Besett.
Macy Molleur scored twice to give Hazen Union a 2-1 lead at the half, but BFA-Fairfax stormed back with three unanswered to secure a 4-2 home win last Friday. Alleigh Gabaree had another strong game in net for the Lady Cats in the loss as BFA-Fairfax evened their record at 1-1.
“We played a really nice first half and had a couple opportunities to go up 3-1, but just couldn’t capitalize on them. They made it tough for us in the second half to get out of our defensive third, but it was a tie game with three minutes to go until they broke through. We have a very young squad and we just have to learn how to close out matches as the season goes on,” said Besett.
Hazen Union is scheduled to host Missisquoi in their home opener on Wednesday, before welcoming Oxbow to town on Friday.
